The Eisenach Ensemble and Mr Simpson's Little Consort

Group photo

The Eisenach Ensemble and Mr Simpson's Little Consort are two musical ensembles specialising in 'early' music, with a nucleus of four regular personnel, pictured here:  Cate McKee (soprano), Piers Snell (viols), Sue Snell (viols and recorders), Phoebe Butler (recorders and viols).

In broad terms, when we perform music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where the music is of the polyphonic tradition, viol consorts and consort-songs, we appear as Mr Simpson's Little Consort, and when we perform 'baroque' music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where the continuo group is the foundation, we appear as the Eisenach Ensemble.  Additional musicians are brought in according to the needs of the musical programme presented.  In recent years, we have been proud to collaborate with Christine Whiffen (harpsichord), a founder member of the Eisenach Ensemble, Alison Crum (viols), Roy Marks (viols and lute), Andrew Kerr (viols), Maurice Rogers (viols), Angela Hicks (soprano), Annabella Tysall (soprano), John Alexander (reader), Katharine May (harpsichord), Dawn Johnston (lute/theorbo), John Wearmouth (organ).
